Tools for Mechanisms

Overview

In general, when building the bodies of robots you need to drill holes for wires, axles, etc, Attach screws etc. So I will assume that you've got a "basic" set of tools available for general needs, things like screw drivers, a hammer, a saw or two, and pliers.

These tools are the ones you might not already have ...

A "Rotary" Tool

Sometimes referred to as a Moto-tool because of the initial popularity of that tool. This is essential! You use this tool and the various bits available for it to cut things, shape things, sand things, whatever. If you only get one tool that you need it will probably be one of these.

A Cordless Drill

Second on the list will definitely be a cordless drill. Besides their general usefulness around the house or apartment you will find they are good for twisting wire pairs, getting into cramped spots, screwing in bolts, screws, etc. Sure you can fake it with the rotary tool, but the slow speed and high torque of a cordless drill comes in handy.

If it breaks you can scavenge the motor for a robot!

A Hot Glue Gun

Fast replacing Duct Tape, Hot Glue has earned a place in my heart as a way of putting something together quickly and with good adhesion. If you look at the toy conversions you will see a number of places where Hot Glue is holding it all together. Mounting sensors, attaching wheels to motor shafts, etc. Anywhere you need the equivalent of a bit of concrete hot glue is there.
